Roots & Shoots

The Jane Goodall Institute is a non-profit organization founded by renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall with a mission of creating a better world for all living things. Roots & Shoots is their youth service program that aims to make a positive change—for human communities, for animal kingdom, and for the environment.

Working together with the Jane Goodall Institute in Hong Kong, I have created and proposed several concepts for online games designed to help spread and support Dr Goodall’s vision.

In a game focused on educating children about recycling, the player’s goal was to control Mr H, catch various pieces of rubbish thrown by misbehaving citizens and correctly separate them into recycling bins. The pink dolphin puzzle game taught the players about objects and activities harmful to this species native to the Pearl River Delta. Lights Off, Stars On then tackled the not-so-well-known issue of light pollution by making the players switch off unnecessary lights in a scrolling skyscraper.

The Mr H game made it into production, but due to management changes at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where I worked at the time it was sadly never completed. Regardless, I have really enjoyed working with the Jane Goodall Institute and even developed several of their websites.
